Controversy has arisen in the Mexican education sector after several states, led by the state of Nuevo León, are contemplating enabling a kind of parental censorship of certain academic content related to sex education and gender equality.

Currently, it is the state that decides the academic content taught in each school year to students in Mexican schools, but this proposal wants Article 3 of the State Education Law to be reformed so that parents can have the power to choose the content if they do not agree.

«We are not against sex education, but there are parents who do not agree that they liberalize the sexuality of our children without legal consequences for anyone, the State must respect that right,» Leonardo García Camarena, national president of the National Union of Parents (UNPF), told the EFE news agency.

Last July 14, CONAPO released a couple of worrying data: most Mexican adolescents start their sexual life without taking any protection and, in addition, the high rates of child pregnancies in the country are the result of sexual abuse or unions at too early ages, something that for Dr. Gonzalez are two reasons to bet on education.

Parental pin

Mexico, Jul 9 (EFE) – The parental pin, a tool that would allow families to decide whether their children receive education on sensitive issues such as sexuality and equality, has recently sparked controversy in Mexico and is already being debated in several of its states.

«We are not against sex education, but there are parents who do not agree that they liberalize the sexuality of our children without legal consequences for anyone, the state must respect that right,» Leonardo Garcia Camarena, national president of the National Union of Parents (UNPF), told Efe this Sunday.

At the end of last May, an initiative to reform the Education Law of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon opened the door to the adoption of this tool, which is now also being discussed in the central state of Aguascalientes.

The problem with this proposal, according to Kalycho Escoffié, lawyer and leader of the Human Rights Center of the Monterrey Law School, is that this pin could be applied to any type of content and does not require parents to justify reasons.
