Alberto stoically endured the long hours of taping the contest, sitting in a corner of the set next to other spouses of the show’s protagonists, such as Diana Nauta, Chicho’s wife, who was another regular on the set during filming.
After so many hours on the set, the Gómez Kemp-Berco couple became great friends with other members of the «Un, dos, tres…» team, such as the couple formed by Luisa Armenteros and Luis Lorenzo, or with the Hurtado sisters.
When Mayra was diagnosed with tongue cancer in January 2009, Alberto Berco went back into depression once his wife was home after the operation. Mayra, remembering the hard times she lived through between 1979 and 1981, fought with all her strength, not only to beat her cancer, but above all to help pull her husband out of the pit. Fortunately, she succeeded.

The Spanish-Cuban is a timeless myth and an absolute reference, although her great star faded in 1988, when she put an end to her career in the contest. She never again enjoyed that overwhelming success, but she probably didn’t need it either. He had touched the sky with his hands, and had even stayed there to live in it. From that moment on, he began a gradual landing that, already in the 2000s, turned into a dramatic fall. And unfortunately it affected his intimate and personal life.

The mythical hostess gave an interview to the program Socialité and her words were most touching, since Mayra, besides being a widow, has been left alone. «I am surviving and resisting, but well I am not well. I can’t be.» As happens to many older people because of the coronavirus, Gómez Kemp is much more isolated than she would like «since my husband died, I don’t know what a hug from anyone is, because I can’t let anyone get close because of the damn pandemic.» Her fear of the virus is more than justified, considering that in addition to being at risk age, she has suffered from cancer on two occasions.

La mítica presentadora ha concedido una entrevista al programa Socialité y sus palabras han sido de lo más emotivas, ya que Mayra, además de viuda, se ha quedado sola. «Sobrevivo y resisto, pero no estoy bien. No puedo estarlo». Como les ocurre a muchos ancianos por el coronavirus, Gómez Kemp está mucho más aislada de lo que le gustaría «desde que murió mi marido, no sé lo que es un abrazo de nadie, porque no puedo dejar que nadie se acerque por la maldita pandemia. «Su miedo al virus está más que justificado, teniendo en cuenta que además de estar en riesgo por la edad, ha sufrido cáncer en dos ocasiones.
Afortunadamente, esta enfermedad ya está controlada, pero los médicos son cautos y no permiten que Mayra apenas se mueva. «Estoy recluida en mi casa, los médicos no me dejan salir más que para comprar comida. No tengo familia. Mi familia está en otro país y no puede viajar debido a la pandemia».
El conmovedor testimonio de uno de los rostros más populares de la televisión nacional durante los años 80 no ha dejado indiferente a nadie y muchos medios de comunicación se hacen eco de sus palabras. Un discurso que, desgraciadamente, puede parecerse al de miles de personas mayores en nuestro país.
