José Alberto «Pepe» Mujica Cordano (nacido el 20 de mayo de 1935) es un político y agricultor uruguayo que ocupó el cargo de 40º Presidente de Uruguay entre 2010 y 2015[1]. Ex guerrillero de los Tupamaros, estuvo encarcelado 12 años durante la dictadura militar de las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Miembro de la coalición de partidos de izquierda Frente Amplio, Mujica fue ministro de Ganadería, Agricultura y Pesca de 2005 a 2008 y senador después. Como candidato del Frente Amplio, ganó las elecciones presidenciales de 2009 y tomó posesión del cargo de Presidente el 1 de marzo de 2010.
Se le ha descrito como «el jefe de Estado más humilde del mundo» debido a su estilo de vida austero y a que dona alrededor del 90% de su salario mensual de 12.000 dólares a organizaciones benéficas que benefician a los pobres y a los pequeños empresarios[2][3].
Mujica nació el 20 de mayo de 1935, hijo de Demetrio Mujica, de ascendencia vasca española,[4][5] y de Lucy Cordano, hija de inmigrantes italianos. El padre de Mujica era un pequeño agricultor que se arruinó poco antes de su muerte en 1940, cuando su hijo tenía cinco años. Los padres de su madre eran inmigrantes muy pobres de Liguria. Lucy Cordano nació en Carmelo, donde sus padres habían comprado 2 hectáreas en Colonia José para cultivar viñedos. Entre los 13 y los 17 años, Mujica fue ciclista de varios clubes en diferentes categorías. También militó en el Partido Nacional, donde se hizo amigo de Enrique Erro.
