La comunidad LGBTQ de Argentina, y de la región en general, sigue llorando la pérdida de una de sus líderes más vocales y compasivas. Lohana Berkins, presidenta fundadora de la Asociación de Lucha por la Identidad Travesti y Transexual (ALITT), falleció la semana pasada tras un largo periodo de hospitalización.
Nacida en la localidad de Pocitos, situada en la provincia de Salta, Berkins crecería hasta fundar la ALITT, una de las organizaciones a las que se atribuye el aumento de la visibilidad de las personas trans y que contribuyó a la aprobación de la histórica política de identidad de género de Argentina en 2012.
Otro momento de admirable resistencia se produjo en 2002, cuando Berkins se inscribió en un programa de formación y licencia para convertirse en maestra en Buenos Aires. Al enterarse de que no podría hacerlo con su nombre y su identidad de género autoafirmada, presentó una apelación formal al gobierno de Buenos Aires y ganó, allanando el camino para que innumerables hombres y mujeres trans recibieran una educación y un empleo mientras se respetaba su identidad.

¿quién es lohana berkins?
En 1994, Lohana fundó la Asociación de Lucha por la Identidad Travesti y Transexual (ALITT), que presidió hasta su muerte[1]. Fue la impulsora de la Ley 3062 de respeto a la identidad adoptada por travestis y transexuales y aprobada por la Legislatura porteña en 2009.
En 2002, protagonizó una reivindicación fundamental para la visibilidad de las travestis y las personas trans al inscribirse en la Escuela Normal Nº 3 para ser maestra. [2]Ante la imposibilidad de hacerlo con su nombre, presentó una queja ante la Defensoría del Pueblo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, que ordenó a las autoridades de la escuela respetar su identidad de género[3].
Fue asesora legislativa (mandato cumplido) en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires por el Partido Comunista (liderado por Patricio Echegaray), convirtiéndose así en la primera persona travesti con un empleo público. También se desempeñó como asesora legislativa de la diputada porteña Diana Maffía, en temas como Derechos Humanos, Garantías, Mujer, Infancia, Niñez y Adolescencia[4].

Frente Nacional por la Ley de Identidad de Género, an alliance of more than fifteen organizations that promoted the sanction at national level of a law that would guarantee the adequacy of all personal documents to the gender identity lived and the name chosen by people and the access to medical treatments for those who request interventions on their body. The Gender Identity Law was finally sanctioned by the National Congress in 2012 and enacted by the President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Since 2013, she was the director of the Office of Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation where she carried out an investigation on the access to Justice of trans people and another on their arbitrary detentions throughout history. It was there that «To recognize is to repair» was born, a project of reparation to transvestite-trans people victims of institutional violence.
