Introducción. Los estudiantes universitarios que inician sus relaciones sexuales a temprana edad tienen más parejas sexuales, y son más propensos a tener conductas sexuales de riesgo. Esto los hace más vulnerables a las enfermedades de transmisión sexual y a los embarazos no deseados.
Método. Se realizó un estudio transversal con 1854 estudiantes universitarios de entre 18 y 24 años de las áreas de la salud (medicina, enfermería, odontología y psicología) de dos universidades públicas del Estado de México. Se establecieron correlaciones a través de X² entre el inicio temprano de las relaciones sexuales, el número de parejas sexuales, el sexo grupal, el sexo transaccional y el sexo casual.
Resultados. Los hombres inician sus relaciones sexuales a edades más tempranas que las mujeres. En los hombres, existen correlaciones estadísticamente significativas (p=.001) entre el inicio temprano de las relaciones sexuales y el sexo casual, transaccional y en grupo. En las mujeres, existen correlaciones estadísticamente significativas entre el inicio temprano de las relaciones sexuales y el sexo casual, y el tener más de cinco parejas sexuales.
